Jasmine's trip to Rakiura - Stewart Island

Jasmine's trip to Rakiura - Stewart Island

Hi Guy's, I went to Stewart Island with Mummy and Daddy for a holiday. We went to the island on the ferry, it was awesome ... it was so bumpy it was like a roller coaster. We stayed in a cottage on a cliff overlooking Halfmoon Bay (Halfmoon Bay was supposed to be named Horse-shoe Bay, but when they drew the map of the island they mixed up the two bays and put the wrong name down - Horse-shoe bay is beside Halfmoon Bay) and daddy put out some bread on the balcony. Soon we had Kaka's on the balcony and the roof eating bread and mummy patted one ... there were 6 of them.

We did lots of walking and i saw an Elephant Seal, lots of birds and sea creatures. We took a ferry to Ulva Island. Ulva Island is a very special island with lots of rare birds ... we saw Kakas and Kakarekis, Wekas, Pigeons, Tuis, Saddlebacks and Robins (we scuffed up the ground and Robins came and ate the bugs at our feet ... if you look to the right of my smile between the two punga's you can see one). We collected lots and lots of shells from the beach.

We went and saw a giant chain that goes into the ocean. There is another chain coming out of the ocean at Bluff. It is there because ancient Maori's beleived that the South Island is Maui's Canoe and that Stewart Island is the anchor ... the chain represents the anchor chain linking the 2.

In the old days there wasn't much paper around, and they used to write on the back of a special leaf from the puheretaiko or 'Mutton Bird Scrub' and send them like post-cards ... i wrote a letter to Burnham School on a leaf and posted it. I hope it gets there.
We saw lots of sea creatures and mummy, daddy and I caught lots of them. I am holding a giant sea slug. On the last day Daddy and i went down and caught a giant Cat's Eye Shell, a Chiton, a whelk, a Camoflage Crab, 2 Hermit crabs and the sea-slug which i named Floppy-pop-icus.There were two little ponies on the island and a puppy named Jazz that loved me, and i took it for a walk. We made lots of sand castles. It was so much fun ... i love Stewart Island
