Welcome to Room 2 - 2010 - copy of the newsletter

Dear Parents, Whanau,

Hope that everyone had an opportunity to catch up with friends and family over the Christmas and New Year period. It is another exciting year for me as there will be new students in the classroom with different personalities and dynamics.

For myself, I had a belated honeymoon in Fiji with my family. Two things that struck me was the friendliness of the Fijians and how I don’t like humidity!

It has been wonderful to watch my eldest (Ruby) start to learn to ride a bike. Where Anthony is starting to crawl and mutilating any pot plants that he can get his hands on.

Through my own experiences as a parent I have observed the importance of having strong of lines communication between students, parents and the teacher to maximize with a child’s learning.

Through open lines of communication between the parent, student, and teacher is the key to promoting an educational climate that is conducive to learning. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. Together we will make a difference!

Homework

Reading

It is my expectation that students will read 15 minutes every night except Friday. Each night please sign the reading log to indicate that your child has read his or her book. On occasions I am aware that reading will be unable to be completed. Please still sign the book, and indicate reading was not done, as I believe this will assist children to take ownership of their learning.

Spelling

On Monday children will given be 8 words from the most high frequency word list to learn spell. The children will be tested on these words the following Friday. There are several lists to meet individual needs.

I have found that some children can learn words by learning them just once where others need more time. I will leave this to your discretion how much time your child spends learning his or her words. My only expectation is that their spelling list is signed by yourself ready for Friday.

Class Room Rules

As a class we will be developing our own rules and expectations for Room 2. This will include attitudes and standards of work expected. I believe this is important for the students to have a “buy in ‘in developing and maintaining the learning environment.

Across Burnham School each classroom uses a Traffic Light’ System, to maintain acceptable behaviour.

If a student chooses to not follow classroom procedures/ behaviour then they will be given a verbal warning. If a student continues to not follow expected procedures/ behaviour he/she will be put on orange light. If the student still continues to ignore the warning the student will be put on red which will result in the child attending a lunch class and a letter will be sent to their parent.

Finally

Please feel free to contact me at any time if there is a question or situation you would like to discuss. You will receive additional communication throughout the school year. I look forward to building a relationship with you and your child and thus providing the best education that I am capable of giving.

Sincerely,

Chris. Thurlow
