The Kiwi is a smallish brown New Zealand bird that has a long beak with nostrils at the end. It has good eyes for seeing in the dark and whiskers too. Kiwi have power legs with razor sharp claws. These parts of the kiwi’s body help them to find and catch their food in the bush at night. Kiwis have tiny wings and are covered in rough shaggy feathers. Our kiwi in the south Island is lighter in the feathers and longer than the North Island Kiwi.

Kiwi find a lot of their food they need in the Native New Zealand bush where they live. Some of the food they eat grows in the bush like roots, berries and seeds. They also eat things that live in the bush like worms, insects and spiders. Kiwi find their food in the dark at night time. They use their good eyes and smell to find them. Their powerful legs, beak and claws help them dig up insects and catch them. CAYLEE
